Introduction to a Lover of Cats, Books, and Tea

Hi, my name is Rachel, and I'm an English major. (pause for "Hi, Rachel.") It has been two weeks since someone rolled their eyes and/or cringed at my major. It's been 4 hours since someone asked if I was gonna be a teacher. That question probably doesn't bother people who plan to be teachers. I commend those people. I'm not that brave. I'd rather sit alone and edit things. That's my idea of a good time. Especially if I have a lot of extra time to read.

Speaking of books, I love them. I'd love to ramble for hours about books. They're great. I especially recommend Three Dark Crowns, my most recent read; the trilogy that begins with A Court of Thorns and Roses, one of my all time favorites; and the Infernal Devices trilogy, which ripped my heart out and still hasn't given a sizable chunk of it back. My taste in television is a bit less exciting. I've watched Friends at least three times this summer. The series, not an episode. So, yeah, I'll stick to book recs.

Since it'll probably come up eventually, I spent last fall in Italy studying abroad. I feel the need to mention it constantly, but I try to hold my tongue. The biggest thing I took away from that trip, though, is that you should study abroad. Yes, you. The university has so many options and so many scholarships, and I feel like it helps make you more of who you are. So please, go somewhere. Italy is a good choice. Espresso is cheap, pastries are cheap, airfare in Europe is cheap, it's all just a matter of getting over there. It's so worth it.

For now, I'm going to skip food, because I don't even know where to start, and end this little introduction with pets.

Personal Photo of Cleo and Misi
July 2016

Last April, we had one cat. Then our neighbor wouldn't let his daughter's cat have kittens in his house, so we took her in so she could have her babies, got her fixed, and got the babies fixed when they were old enough. We tried and failed to find them homes, so now we have five cats. When I move out, it'll be two and three, but until then, we're just that house with a lot of cats. As a sort of tangent, if you get the Tidy Cats Breeze Cat Box system and change the pads once a week like you're supposed to, you will never smell a cat box ever again. Trust me, I know. We have five litter boxes. Anyways, back to cats. In the first picture, the gray cat is Cleopatra. Cleo is the tiny baby. She is also the only one who knows how to get the treats out of the treat toy. Artemisia Gentileschi, or Misi (mee-see), the white and gray one, is one of my babies. She yells at things. Things I can't see. It's great.

Personal Photo of Deedee and Pietro
July 2016

Deedee is our first cat. She's not overly fond of the babies, even now, but they're getting along better and better, and we still give her lots of love. Deedee is also the only one I didn't name. We usually just call her Momma though, which confuses people, because she isn't the kittens' mom. Next to her is Pietro Maximoff T'challa Samuel Wilson Schutte. He is my son and I love him. He's grown a lot since this picture. He weighs 11 pounds now, and it's all solid muscle and bone. He's large and I love him, even though he knocks all the things off of all the things.

Personal Picture of Pippy
July 2017

This is Pippy Longstocking. She has little specks of orange in her fur. She's the pretty one. She cuddles with me, and will gladly suck on earlobes, a habit she has had since kittenhood. She's a total dollface. I want to be as pretty as she is when I grow up.

Amongst all of them, they play and squabble and cuddle and I adore every bit of it. I have a lot of feelings about them, and could probably ramble on for a million more words, but I think I'll end that bit here. Other things that could be relevant are my love for Lush, my trip to South Korea, my coffee/tea/mug obsession, crafting, crystals and other rocks, and stuff like that, but my little fingers are tired. I hope the cat pictures compensated for all the rambling. Thanks for letting me introduce myself! Bye!

  1. It is so nice to meet about bibliophlie, Rachel! And I think it's great that you like editing: are you thinking about that as a career? I follow some great editors at Twitter and Google+ and it's an alternative career I have often pondered, along with being a librarian. I love teaching online, but being an editor and/or being a librarian also appeal. STRONGLY appeal. And of course I approve of the cats: five cats must be quite a handful, but a happy handful. And one named for Gentileschi: that's fabulous! Perhaps she is yelling at manifestations of Indian gods and goddesses. Who could appear in your stories for class. You never know. The goddess Shashthi rides a cat as her vahana: Wikipedia: Shashti. And cats knocking things off the things is essential: it's how we know the earth is not flat! How We Know the Earth is Round :-)

  2. Hey Rachel! I think it's great that you're an English major! One of my best friends is an English major and she always mentions the latest books she has read and she really seems to love it! I don't particularly like writing essays and such, so I think it's awesome that you do! And the fact that you've stayed strong through all these people criticizing your major or cringing at it! Don't let em :-)

Also, I've always wanted to study abroad so I think that's so interesting that you got to go to Italy! I've heard it's truly a life changing experience :)

  3. Hi Rachel! I think it's pretty awesome that you're and English major, because I definitely don't have what it takes to be! I'm already impressed with you!

I'm so jealous that you got to study abroad in Italy. It is my DREAM to travel there and see all the basic touristy things. Studying abroad doesn't work out with my schedule now with my graduating in May, and I'm so upset that I didn't take advantage of that opportunity.

  4. Hello Rachel! My name is Taylor, and I really like cats too! I have two of my own that stays with my grandmother. One is named Baby and the other is named Socks. The nest part of having cats is how sweet but weird they can be. I also have studied abroad, I didn't go to Italy but I went to France this summer! I agree everyone on campus must study abroad. It is an amazing experience and you are absolutely right, Once you get to the European Countries, airfare is cheap! Taking the train is also cheap as well. I have an obsession with LUSH products. I have 8 different products next to the tub as I speak.

  5. Rachel,

First of all, I love all your pictures of your cats! They are so sweet; I recently let a stray cat stay at my home back in Texas, and he has become quite the family pet. Also, I love that you're an English major! I am a philosophy major, so we both have lots of similar classes as far as writing, literature, and classes that pertain to those two things. Similar to you, I also love reading. After just reading your Week 2 post, I talked about one of my favorite books. It's so refreshing to meet someone else who has such a love for reading as I do. I certainly wish you the best for this semester, and I hope to also read more of your stories during this class!

  6. Hey Rachel!
English is a great major! I know I've taken a few upper division English classes here at OU, and from my experience, the professors are great in the major.
Again, another blog that I've read that contains study abroad travels, or even travels in general. That's so cool that you studied abroad in Italy. My sister also studied abroad there 2 years ago, and I've only heard amazing things about it. I bet you had a blast!
And now to your cats, they are PRECIOUS! Each of your cats just seem to have such personality!
Anyways, good luck to you this semester!

  7. Nice to meet you Rachel. I enjoyed reading your introduction, I am a lover of cats as well. My cat is a silver tabby and her name is Kiki. You have some awesome cats and hopefully I get to see more pictures in the future. That's cool that you're an English major. I'm a finance and accounting major so it's nice to hear about something else. Hope you have a great semester and good luck!

  8. Hi Rachel!

I think it's awesome that you have been to South Korea. I have been to Pohang, but it was just for training and I didn't get to see very much of the country. I would definitely like to go back at some point though.
As someone who wants to be a teacher, I find it very interesting that you prefer to, as you say, "sit alone and edit things." There is no way I could do that, as I couldn't focus that long to save my life, but I am glad that there are people who can and who enjoy it.

Good luck on the rest of the semester!

  9. Hi Rachel!

I really liked this introduction. You definitely made me laugh a couple of times. I agree that being a teacher would be difficult, but I do think it would be so rewarding! I am so jealous that you got to study abroad, especially in Italy. I really regret not taking that chance sooner. Plus, cheap espresso is just about the best thing. I’m sure espresso in Italy is top notch. I look forward to getting to read your stories for the rest of the semester!

  10. Hi Rachel!

Your cats are gorgeous, especially your little Pippy! I have two cats of my own: a black tabby and a cow cat. We definitely share the coffee/tea/mug obsession and a love for crystals and rocks (I have my own growing collection of rocks). I bet that we could have some lovely conversations.

I look forward to seeing what you come up with this semester!

  11. Hi Rachel,

First of all, your cats are so cute!! They look so fluffy and playful. I can't believe you have so many cats, I bet it gets rough sometimes especially when taking care of them. Kudos to you for taking them home with you, instead of taking them to shelter or something. I think it's really cool that you study abroad. I want to study abroad one day, I think it would be a really neat experience since. I hope I get to visit Europe sometime soon. Good luck for rest of the semester!

  12. Hi Rachel! I think you should mention you’re trip to Italy all the time! I’m sure it was one of the best experiences you’ve had, and worth sharing. I love the show Friends. It’s a classic! It’s so nice to see that people still read for fun. I feel the passion for a good book is starting to decrease with age, and I think it should be the opposite! Everyone can make time for a good read in my opinion.

  13. Hi Rachel! And yes, I had to let a chuckle our for that introduction. Plus, I think your major is super interesting. I love writing and much to the dismay of my friends, I am the first one to point out a grammatical error even though I am far from flawless! But they still love me, I am sure you've experienced the same thing. Also, I think its great that you love reading so much. Honestly, all of your interests are very thought provoking and relatable, with the exception of not being able to choose a favorite. But who can hold that against you?! Brainstorm! You should try reading a book about cats at a buffet in Italy.

  14. Hi Rachel!
Your cats are precious, and I absolutely love the names! I just got a new kitten to keep my older kitten company. He acted like I'd just given him the greatest toy in the universe. I'm also a big reader, and I'm totally going to take your book recommendation about Three Dark Crowns (I've already read the others that you mentioned). And I sympathize with the tv thing. I will branch out with books, but when it comes to tv I stick to what I like, and it's not always 'good' tv. I just finished a rewatch of Gossip Girl for the third time...and I am waaay too old for Gossip Girl!

  15. Hey Rachel! Its so cool that you got to study abroad in Italy! I've been before and it was such a great experience and I loved going to much that I am going back in May. I am so jealous that you have 5 cats! I would love to have a cat and my dog in my place but I don't have time to take care of them like they need. It was nice meeting you!

  16. Rachel,

I am very jealous of you getting to go over to Italy to study abroad. I would love to get to study abroad but will never get the opportunity because I have to be here over the summers. Most of my friends have gotten the opportunity and said it was the best time of their college careers. I am not much of a cat person however so we see a little differently on that subject but that is ok! I hope you have a good semester and get to read some more of your work!

  17. Hello Rachel! It's so nice to meet another reader! I got really excited when I saw that you enjoy A Court of Thorns and Roses because I'm currently reading Sarah J. Maas's other series! It starts with Throne of Glass, and you'd probably love it too! I also wish I could travel as much as you..... I've only left the country once and it was to go to Austria this past summer.
I'm definitely a dog person but your cats are beautiful!

  18. Hey Rachel! I really find it great that you love to read, because I do, too! I'm also a fellow avid traveler, and have been wishing to go to South Korea for a while, too. I bet that place was SUPER cool! Also, even though I'm a dog person, I do have to admit that your cats are adorable. I wish you the best of luck this semester, and hope to get to read some of your stories!

  19. Hello Rachel!

I am jealous that you are big into reading! I sadly never have the attention span to be able to read. However, I am actually reading a book in my capstone class right now that I really enjoy. It is called 'Paying for the Party' and it discusses the different ways that people go through college and life afterwards based on their socioeconomic status. I am also jealous that you were able to go abroad. It was always a dream of mine to do before graduation, but it never fit into my schedule smoothly enough for me to be able to.

Have a great rest of the semester!

  20. Hi Rachel! I love your introduction! I didn't cringe or roll my eyes at your major. I actually believe that English majors are one of the most creative people out there and I'm really bad at grammar and such. So forgive me for it haha, but we all have our assumptions of course. You have some spunk to your introduction, so it was fun to read and kept me intrigued. I wish I could've studied abroad while I was in school, but the two people that were holding me back most were my parents. I, of course, had to listen. I mean, I didn't have to, but that's just me. One day I'll get to travel Europe, probably after I get married. I can relate on the topic of food. I don't have distinct taste buds, but I just love food. Your cats are precious and there's nothing wrong with having too much. I mean, maybe, but I love animals. I used to hate cats, until I got to foster a kitten for about a week and it was the worst feeling giving her to another foster home, because I couldn't keep her with my old pup around. It was a pleasure meeting you, good luck this semester!

  21. Hi Rachel!

Your introduction was so fun! Your first paragraph was particularly funny. I was almost an English major before I found out that being a Letters major was a thing. I think it is an amazing major. The Infernal Devices is such fantastic book series so its awesome that you enjoy it. I'll have to check out your other recommendations! Reading about your cats I felt like I was reading my own thoughts about my dogs. Pets are so great and enrich our lives so much! It was so nice reading your introduction and I am excited to read more of your work!

  22. Hi Rachel! Your introduction was so funny and real. I enjoyed reading it. I especially like the part where you did a pause, haha. I'm a big reader too, but I haven't read either of those series. I've found it hard to find time for pleasure reading in college. The last book I read was an offshoot of the Shadowhunter series called the Dark Artifices. It's really good and you should check it out!

  23. Hi Rachel! I loved reading you introduction, I was laughing from the first line! I am not really into reading, but I wish I were. I just have a hard time sitting for a long time to just read or write, I could never be an english major. I am a big dog person and usually do not like cats at all, but thats cool that you do! I bet it was fun having all those little kittens running around, though! Also super cool that you studied abroad in Italy! I would really love to do something like that, it sounds amazing! Thanks for sharing!

  24. Hi rachel!
I complete.ly feel you with the people questioning your major. I am majoring in Film and Media studies and I am sure you can guess how many eye rolls that gets. I hope you do what you're passionate about. I think too many people go into fields that seem smart rather than fields they genuinely care about.

  25. Hello Rachel !

I admire you for being an English major! I bet you cringe at some of the grammatical errors in the stories in our class. I like English but not enough to major in it . I was pretty fortunate to have such great English professors at Cameron University that made me enjoy the subject! Please post updates of your kitties ! They are absolutely adorable. I have two kitties if my own at my Grammys ! One is named baby and the other is named socks. Baby is the oldest and he kinda resembles Garfield. Then, socks is a gray and black fluffy kitty with one white sock. That's why we named him socks . I see you have traveled to many places! I wish I could have the time to travel that many places!
